TOULOUSE AND VIOLETS |
During the 19th century,
the Parma violet arrived mysteriously at St. Jory near Toulouse
and, through the skill of the market-gardeners north of the city,
came to carry the colours of Toulouse practically all over Europe.
Toulouse bcame the City of Violets, but little by little the plant
lost its vigour. The severe winter of 1956 combined with competition
from imports of other flowers almost made an end of it as a crop.
With the aid of scientists who developed in-vitro and out-of-ground
growing
methods, the Chamber of Agriculture, the Territorial Collectivities
and the Town of Toulouse have succeeded in re-establishing production
and today, once again, Toulouse celebrates the violet ! |
